This company could turn the wind farming industry upside down.
Traditional wind turbines may be a thing of the past.
Thereās a founder that created a wind turbine at 1/10th of the cost, and 1/4th of the size of a traditional turbine.
His name? Robert Lumley.
Robert Lumley; Founder and President of Airloom Energy
His death stare might be enough to tell you how crazy he is about wind energy.
Lumley started his career in 1985 as an analyst at Morgan Stanley.
He founded his company, Airloom Energy in 2014. He may have been working on creating wind energy solutions since the early 90s.
Problem: Modern forms of wind energy take up a lot of space. Itās awful to maintain. It sucks to transport parts. It costs a LOT of money upfront.
Wind turbines
Airloom has created a new turbine that might revolutionize wind energy as we know it.
How does it work? The wind pushes the Airloom turbine's set of āwingsā on a circular track. The spin thatās caused by the wind generates electricity.
The science is similar with traditional turbines. When we make more energy from wind turbines, we end up making them bigger. They arenāt any more effective, since they cost more to produce, move, and maintain.
What makes Airloomās solution better than traditional turbines is the oval track. Lumley decided that we don't need a large turbine with 3 wings to capture energy. He decided to make technology that has a smaller design and more wings.
Product Sketch; Airloom Energy
This alternative is much smaller. Itās cheaper. It creates more energy for the cost. It fits in a tractor trailer. It can be manufactured quicker.
The Numbers (as of 2021):
Product Cost: A reduction of $0.76/W (or 89%) from the initial cost per watt to the average turbine. The average difference is about $1.88M per turbine.
Wind Farm Cost: A reduction of $1.04/W (or 83%) from the initial cost per watt to the average wind farm. The average difference is about $19M per farm.
Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE): A reduction of $0.025/kWh (or 66%) from the average lifetime cost per kilowatt.
Using Airloom as a source of energy is a no-brainer for new wind farms moving forward.
